1) Pusser’s Blue LabelPusser’s Rum Blue Label has tasting notes of brown sugar, molasses, baking spices, caramel, toffee, dried fruit, and nutmeg. It’s a full-bodied rum with a rich palate that’s initially sweet but dries out over time. Finish: Long and lingering, without much alcohol burn
2) Pusser’s Gunpowder Proof The nose is full of dried fruits, dates, prunes, slightly overripe figs. The palate is very sweet, plenty of dark, syrupy, stewed fruits. An interesting pot still character with a pleasant muddiness. Full-bodied. The finish is incredibly long and dark.
3) Brugal Rum 1988 Double Aged Rum – This is a truly exceptional rum that undergoes a double-ageing process, combining the rich flavours of ex-bourbon American oak and the finest Oloroso sherry European oak casks. With notes of vanilla, red fruits, toffee, cocoa and natural oak spice, Brugal 1888 is smooth, full of flavour and perfectly balanced. A must-try rum for the curious drinker.
4) Santa Teresa 1976 – Honeyed single estate rum from Venezuela with elements of bitter chocolate, nuts and buttery biscuits. It is made, unusually for a rum, through the solera process (think Sherry): casks of different aged rums are stacked vertically, the oldest (aged around 35 years) at the bottom, and as the distiller draws rum from one cask they top it up with younger liquid from the blend. Enjoy over ice.
5) Don Papa – Don Papa is produced on the sugar capital of the Philippines, due to the perfect combination of climate and rich volcanic soil. Its name comes from Don Papa Isio, one of the unsung heroes of the Philippine Revolution. This rum has a light and fruity nose with a rich-textured finish of vanilla, honey and candied fruit.
6) Mount Gay XO Rum – This ‘extra old’ rum is made by Mount Gay Distillery, in Barbados, from a blend of rums that have been aged for up to 17 years. These rums have been matured in American whiskey, Bourbon and Cognac casks. And that’s what makes it so deliciously complex. It has aromas of vanilla, spice and oak, flavours of salted caramel, dark chocolate and clove and a long, creamy finish. Try it with elderflower liqueur and two dashes of rhubarb bitters and garnish with an orange peel.
